In 1876, Mrs. Jane Oakes commissioned architect W. J. Merritt of NYC to design this Second Empire home. The Victorian was originally built at the southwest end of this street, at the edge of the Shrewsbury River. Harold Hartshorne purchased the house in 1928 and had it moved to its present location. In 2005 major restoration was completed using Merritt's original rendering, including replacement of the widow's watch and the veranda which were removed in the 1928 move.

Anne, modest little houses work really well if they are in a lovely areas--makes for the best of both worlds. ;-))

@kayboblee, yes, this awesome area of Little Silver is only about 5 miles from our modest little home.

Anne, nice to see your name credited for what I assume is a not-too-distant neighborhood of lovely photos. Lovely landscaping as well as interesting architecture. ;-))
