House I grew up in had a Thatcher furnace (oil) it was a lot newer than the one in this vintage ad.

bbandit, our Thatcher was a big green metal boxy unit. Neat thing it had a quartz glass window that you moved a lever to slide a cover and you could see into the combustion chamber while in operation. As a kid watching the flame used to enthrall me. :-))

First house my dad bought had a hydronic heating system. The original boiler was coal fired but had been converted to an oil burner. One of yearly chores when I got old enough to do it, was every fall to bleed all the radiators of any trapped air and then top off the water holding tank. Natural gas finally came to our neighborhood about ten years later and dad had a gas boiler installed. With the new boiler, we gained enough space in the boiler room to put in a work shop (couldn't believe how much room the old boiler, water holding tank, and oil tank took up).
