Why are you reporting this puzzle?

So different from the artist's signature style of fussy interiors crowded with different small prints on clothing, furniture, and wallpaper.

It is. When I first encountered Vuillard, I thought all he did was fussy interiors, and although they can be charming, it does get old. But it turns out he did a lot more than that. I wish he had done more like this!

MoodsterKwa

I think it is great compositionally.

You're welcome!

Thanks for the link, Bluebonnet! Now I see Degas, too.

I thought I sensed the influence of Les Nabis, here. Wow, it sure went for a pretty penny! Thanks for the link, Blue.

Yes, it's so uncharacteristic. Makes me wonder if someone bet him he couldn't do it and this was his attempt to prove them wrong.

I think you nailed it, jkc!

Now you've made me think! For me, it's the intriquing use of color blocking in an intimate scene of two women doing something together--and those colors!!

Bluebonnet

You made me laugh! I feel the same way!

I like this painting, and I don't know why, exactly. Thanks for posting.
