The Coast Guard and Rescue helicopter joined in. They practised picking up from the sea. They hoisted one of the lifeboat men out of the sea.
It was a truly glorious day.

It was also a question of University Challenger and one of the students was from the US and he didn't know the answer - we were so chuffed because we actually knew all the answers in that round. There is a pub down the road called the 'John Paul Jones' which, when we moved here, I thought was a bit strange and then we found out more.

Oh wow. Didn't know that about John Paul Jones. Thanks for that! And, of course, your pics and info on the RNLI :-))

And he won! Captured the British ship, HMS Serapis, and became a national hero.
What was he doing lurking behind Flamborough Head? Waiting on a convoy of British merchant ships being escorted by the Navy.
There have been five US Navy ships called the Bonhomme Richard and the current one is 'an amphibious assault ship currently in service.'
Isn't Jigidi wonderful!

Got to admire Jones's spirit!

By the away - for any Americans on the board - the biggest sea battle of the American War of Independence took place in these waters. John Paul Jones on the Bonhomme Richard was lurking behind the Flamborough Head cliffs you can see in the distance. Cannon balls from the battle landed on the beach at Filey!
As the Bonhomme Richard was about to sink the British Commander shout to Jones to surrender. Jones shouted back, "I have not yet begun to fight!"

Honestly, Irene - there is no other word to describe them. When people call the football players 'heroes' it devalues the word and the whole concept of heroism.

The conditions those men usually go out in, they are very brave people.
