"These ... panels of brocaded silk fabric were once part of a voluminous skirt of a fashionable dress. Stylized flowers and scrolling bands of ribbons and lace are arranged in a highly ordered composition. The pattern’s line of symmetry runs vertically down its center. So-called lace patterns like this originated in Eastern textiles, particularly Ottoman and Persian silks, rather than European lace."
