Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013)
Her early years were spent living a traditional
hunting lifestyle on the land at Ikirasaq on the southern coast of Baffin Island, residing in
igloos and skin tents.
Significant achievements: In 1962, the National Film Board of Canada
produced a film about her entitled Eskimo Artist – Kenojuak; appointed to the Order of
Canada in 1967; Enchanted Owl, a print, was reproduced on a stamp commemorating the
centennial of the Northwest Territories in 1970; elected a member of the Royal Canadian
Academy of Arts in 1974; Return of the Sun, a print, was reproduced on a 17-cent stamp in
1980; appointed a Companion to the Order of Canada in 1982; received an Honorary
Doctorate from Queen’s University in 1991, and an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the
University of Toronto in 1992; The Owl, a drawing, was the sixth in the Masterpieces of
Canadian Art series of stamps in 1993; presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the
National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in Vancouver in 1995; Red Owl, a drawing, was
adapted for the Canadian Mint’s fourth millennium 25-cent piece; the first Inuit winner of the
Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts in 2008
