Two fine days were spent in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after Christmas with our son in Maine.
Our first morning started out with breakfast at one of our favorite places-The Friendly Toast. While we were waiting for the restaurant to open, I snapped a few photos.

The Arch:

"Spanning Chestnut Street at Congress Street between Kearsarge House and the Hartford Building stands the Chestnut Street Public Art Arch, a gift in the form of a wayfinding gateway to the city from The Music Hall. It was designed by local artist Terrence Parker and fabricated by NeoKraft, a Lewiston, Maine, corporation which also installed it in 2018.
• Height: 37 feet (11.25 meters)
• Width: 35.5 feet (10.75 meters)
• Weight: 10,000 pounds
• Materials: Steel and Aluminum coated in Bronze
A pair of seven foot tall pedestal bases clad in light gray granite support the structure. Stainless steel plaques are mounted to the north, east, and west faces of both. The north and outside plaques direct to the nearby sites of the African Burying Ground, Discover Portsmouth, Market Square, Music Hall Loft, and Portwalk North End."

LOL it was an...interesting place to stay at the time, I lived in some of the apts. in the um, noisy part of town. 😉

Well put, Pickle09. It's nice when a group pulls together to beautify an area. Happy holidays!

LOL Ardy!!! "Almost into Maine :-) or had just left Maine :( " Have felt both emotions!!! You have seen so much of the world, your travels are those which most of us dream of!
With hugs and love.....

I "think" we were in Portsmouth in 2018 ( but years tend to be confusing lately)....and do not recall seeing the arch when we went to breakfast, Jacki. I blame age! LOL

The bougainvillea gateway .... such a sweet memory, Faye! I bought a bougainvillea on sale in the fall. It is happily blooming under the "lights" in our sun room. :)) Your Vancouver archway saluting Chinatown is really nice. Thank you for the link! ♥♥

When the research was done on the arch, I was surprised to:
1. Find it was so recent.
2. Have not recalled seeing it before!!!
Thanks, Shirley! Happy New Year!!!

An acquaintance suggested the restaurant many years ago, Lorna. We tried it out and fell in love. Jim always orders a benedict and I order an omelet. With the home fries (the best ever!) slabs of freshly toasted bread, it is almost too much for us to eat!

It's nice that the Music Hall made it possible, Jill. The addition to the neighborhood is nice. We were blessed to have Christmas Eve and part of Christmas day with our son--with the weather (snow where he lives and ice on the roads to Portsmouth), we had to eat "dinner" at around noon on Christmas so Jim and I could safely get to Portsmouth. Any time we can be together is time we cherish. :)

So glad you love the arch, Cindy. It really stood out against the freshly fallen snow (and ice!)

Creatures of routine, we are, Barb. We alternate Christmas visits with Portland, ME and Portsmouth, NH....and in each city we have our favorite restaurants and our routine walks. This year we planned "meals" around opening of the restaurants so we did not have to be in a crowded space. For dinner on Christmas, our son made us a "doggie bag" of rib eye steak, a baguette and mayo (so we could make open faced sandwiches) and fancy potatoes. The next day we found a great place just around the corner from the hotel to get homemade soup to take back to our room. It's all about eating (and planning!) :)))

Time with the kid and the dogs is nothing but good time, Voronica. The puppy was a bit like having a 2 year old around....with 2 "new people", presents, and commotion...but Roo, (the aged), was full of love and kisses as he cuddled up to be petted. Hugs to you!

Lewiston ....you picked a nice spot to live for 25 years, Saavik! Hope you had a good holiday! ♥♥♥

One can not plan on the weather here, Lela, but despite mother nature, we had a fine time. :)

Great you had a good time with The Kid and the granddogs. Doubt I'll ever get to see this in person as I think my traveling days are done. It always meant I was almost into Maine :-) or had just left Maine :-(. Thanks, Suzy. Hugs!

Pickle09

Another way art contributes to a community. Striking!

Impressive arch and a nice tourist friendly touch too! I hope being out in the cold worked up a good appetite for a fine breakfast Suzy? ☺

One very large impressive arch, and so new, Thanks Suzy.

Just thinking of the bougainvillea gateway in Montreal... 😊😊😊

Vancouver has a gateway, too. Thought you might like to see it:
