It's glitz and glam tonight in the tiny principality of Monaco, once graced by an American princess Grace and now home to our homebred South African princess, Charlene who is married to Prince Albert. Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297 when the Genoese leader of the Guelphs, Francesco Grimaldi and his troops, dressed up as nuns to take the principality by stealth.

Monaco is the second smallest country in the world and is surrounded by France on three sides and the remaining part of the country is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea.

For the rich and famous people from across the world, Monaco is a premier tourist destination and recreation center. Three of James Bond Films have been shot here in Monte-Carlo Casino which opened in 1863 creating a new income for the state. However, natives of Monaco are not allowed to gamble here and visit the casino!

The tiny size, a huge demand and minimal availability of land, mean the real estate in Monaco can be considered as the most expensive throughout the world. It also has almost zero unemployment, the third highest income per capita and the longest lives in the world. Who wouldn't like to be a Monagasque?

The port is always crammed with super yachts, the rich pour in to watch the Monaco Grand Prix, gamble and party or to escape into childhood to watch the annual Monaco Festival Internationale du Cirque which features heavily in the puzzle.

"If there is anything so romantic as that castle-palace-fortress of Monaco I have not seen it. If there is anything more delicious than the lovely terraces and villas of Monte Carlo I do not wish to see them. There is nothing beyond the semi-tropical vegetation, the projecting promontories into the Mediterranean, the all-embracing sweep of the ocean, the olive groves, and the enchanting climate! One gets tired of the word beautiful."

To a teacher that is a wonderful compliment Judy. I really appreciate it so much. Jayne

I've heard it said that the purpose of an education is to open the door to a subject. You have opened so many doors in such a beautiful way that it is mind boggling! Thank you, Jayne! Judy
