In Today's Daily Jigsaw puzzle, we admire the Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte de Dom Luís I). It is a double-deck iron arch bridge that spans the Douro River, linking the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in northern Portugal.

Designed by Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, a disciple and former partner of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge was constructed between 1881 and 1886. When completed, its 172.5-meter central arch was the longest of its kind in the world.

The upper deck opened to pedestrians and horse-drawn trams in 1886, while the lower deck, designed for road traffic, opened in 1888. The bridge replaced the aging Ponte Pênsil (suspension bridge), vastly improving mobility between the bustling port wine lodges of Gaia and the historic center of Porto.

Named after King Luís I of Portugal, the bridge became a powerful symbol of Porto's late 19th-century modernization. It marked a turning point in the city's infrastructure, supporting rapid industrial and urban growth. The bridge reinforced the region's economic dynamism by physically and symbolically linking the wine-exporting hub of Vila Nova de Gaia with Porto's commercial core ♥

@bevpuzzler8 🥹This house was built in 1893-95. External walls are double brick which really traps the heat in Summer 🥵and the cold in Winter 🥶🥶🥶🥹🥹I'd love to move but at my age,it seems like a lot of work. Not a spring chicken 🐣 anymore ya know 🤣

Porto is at the very top of my bucket list.

I've never been to Portugal but from the thing I've read and have seen, it sure would be a place I will like to visit. Thanks for all the information, too.
