In today’s Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we admire the historic Crystal Mill, a striking two-story powerhouse in Crystal, Colorado.

George C. Eaton and B.S. Phillips built the mill in 1892 as part of the Sheep Mountain Tunnel and Mining Company.

Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the Crystal River, the structure stands strong on a stone and timber foundation anchored into the cliffside. Workers used hand-hewn logs to construct the building, designing it with a pitched roof and vented walls to endure Colorado’s harsh mountain climate.

At its peak, the mill powered an air compressor that drove machinery in the Sheep Mountain silver mines.

Engineers funneled river water through a penstock (wooden pipeline) to operate a turbine-driven air compressor, which kept mining drills running efficiently—even during the silver panic of 1893. The lower section, now partially collapsed, once held gears, belts, and shafts, while the upper chamber contained the main drive mechanism.

The nearby town of Crystal City, incorporated in 1881, flourished as a bustling mining hub with nearly 600 residents at its peak. The town boasted newspapers, hotels, saloons, and the exclusive Crystal Club. But its isolated location and rugged terrain made transportation difficult. By 1917, mining operations shut down, and the town slowly faded.

Ownership of the mill changed over the years. Treasure Mountain Ranch, Inc. acquired the site in 1954, and in 1985, the Crystal Mill earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places ♥

What a story. Building a two-story powerhouse like that back in 1892 with the isolated location and rugged terrain is unbelievable. To think 600 people lived at the peak of Crystal Mill mining. In the picture you get a clear view of how it was which was amazing. Thanks so much for this story and another pieces of history.
