Ángel Zárraga (1886–1946) was a Mexican painter celebrated for his fusion of European modernist styles with Mexican themes.
Born in Durango, he studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City and later in Paris, becoming part of the avant-garde scene. His early works reflected Symbolism and Cubism before shifting to a more classical and monumental style.
Zárraga painted murals in Mexico and Europe, including at the Château de Vert-Cœur and the Mexican embassy in Paris. He also contributed to the art competitions at the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics.
In his personal life, Zárraga married Jeanette Ivanoff, a dance teacher and football player, who captained the French women's team Les Sportives to a championship in 1922. In 1934, he married María Luisa Gysi, a Swiss national. He returned to Mexico during World War II, painting murals at the Club de Banqueros and Monterrey Cathedral. Zárraga died of pneumonia in 1946 in Mexico City.
