In 1665, Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard University. A member of the Wampanoag tribe in Martha's Vineyard, he and a Wampanoag classmate were taught on the Vineyard by Peter Folger, the maternal grandfather to Benjamin Franklin, then at a grammar school in Cambridge in around 1657, before entering Harvard's Indian College. Geraldine Brooks' novel, "Caleb's Crossing," is based on his experience.

Wonderful! I'm glad there are such programs. Thanks for the info!

kshastings

ESL is a program for anyone who has immigrated to the US and is seeking (or has just acquired) citizenship. Here in Texas, most of our immigrants are from Mexico, Central America, and South America. My group consists mostly of Mexicans, with one from Colombia, and one from Korea.

English as 2nd language...what is the 1st, or are there multiple languages? Wonderful that you're doing this. The girl was after my own heart. Kudos to you, kshastings! ~ Christy

I think Harvard has the original pic. I'm using the book with the English as a Second Language group that I lead. They love the story too; they fell a connection to him, but also to the girl, who is, as they are, a stranger in a strange land.

Wonderful painting of Caleb, kshastings. I've read "Caleb's Crossing" and loved it. I hadn't thought to look up any possible portraits of him. Thank you for sharing this! - Christy

kshastings

easy to find online. I think you'll enjoy

Atsutsa

No, not yet.

kshastings

oh, that's interesting! Have you read Geraldine Brooks' novel?

Atsutsa

Oh, I wanted to let you know that I had posted the picture and caption to my FB pages because I have friends at Aquinnah. Turns out he was a long ago cousin of one of my friends.

kshastings

Thank you for caring!

Atsutsa

Thank you for this.
