In Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we visit Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, located in Shottery near Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

It is a quintessential example of Tudor architecture and a cherished piece of literary history. Built in 1463 as a modest three-room farmhouse, it became the childhood home of Anne Hathaway, who later married William Shakespeare. The original kitchen and parlor from the 15th century still exist today.

Anne’s grandfather, John Hathaway, was the first family member to reside there as a tenant sheep farmer. Anne was born in the cottage in 1556 and likely lived there until her marriage to Shakespeare in 1582.

Over the centuries, the Hathaway family expanded the property. Anne’s brother, Bartholomew, added an upper floor and new chimneys in the early 17th century, transforming the humble farmhouse into a more substantial dwelling. Despite its name, the building is more accurately described as a spacious farmhouse rather than a cottage.

The cottage remained in the Hathaway family for 13 generations until financial difficulties led to its sale in 1846.

In 1892, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired the property, preserving it as a museum. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved interiors, including original furniture like the Hathaway bed, and stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens and orchards ♥

In 1969 there was a fire at the cottage which did significant damage. The home was restored by the National Trust. So, parts of the cottage do date to Shakespearian England, while other areas have had to be restored.

It was a long time ago...my first visit to UK..downonthefarm.
Could I be thinking of Shakespeare's Home?

@PennyTHD This isn't a replica house and has never burned down. @tgchickering Shottery remains delightfully rural in its development - new builds have been sympathetically allowed to maintain the village atmosphere. I guess you're both thinking of some other Shakespeare-connected places.

While the angle of the photo shows an idyllic English setting,
if memory serves correctly, the house is in close proximity to
a jarringly modern townscape. I remember being rather disappointed.

According to wikipaedia it is the original building but it was damaged by a fire in 1969. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust restored it. There are other replicas of this building around the world.

Interesting and both NancyMN & PennyTHD thanks for your comments. So much to be said for this puzzle. Thanks James Kingman

So interesting to know, and so beautiful to see! The thatch work is amazing, especially how the thatch seems to bend into the windows in the larger part of the house. @PennyTHD, does anyone know what flowers might have been there originally? If hollyhocks, why don't they put them back? I grew up with them and I think they're beautiful. No stems, of course, but that's no problem: we cut a few blossoms off and floated them in a clear glass bowl. (No brandy snifters in my parents' house!)

Lovely, thank you for posting.

This is actually a replica of Anne's house. The original burned in a fire. Some of the original building may have been salvageable, but most of what is here is a replication of the original. Also, the garden was more extensive in about 1960, with lots of hollyhocks and other flowers no longer in style. I think I have a photo of the original in my backlog of puzzles. It was taken from a color slide; the color gels of that decade haven't aged all that well...

I would love to see this!

Thanks for this puzzle and the history! Wow, 1463, that is amazing! There is something so special about Half-Timbered buildings and a thatched roof, so beautifully simple! And yet amazingly long lived!
