In Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we visit the archaeological site of ancient Olympia, nestled in the western Peloponnese. It is the cradle of the Olympic Games ♥

The first recorded Games took place in 776 BCE, held every four years to honor Zeus, amid grand temples, treasuries, and a stadium that seated roughly 45,000 spectators. The Temple of Zeus, soon home to Phidias's legendary gold-and‑ivory statue - one of the Seven Wonders - dominated the sanctuary.

These Games endured for over a millennium. In 393 CE, Emperor Theodosius I banned them, deeming them pagan rituals - ending an era of athletic and religious celebration. Olympia then lay fallow, its monuments buried by earthquakes and sediment.

Systematic excavations in the 19th century uncovered its ancient grandeur.

Inspired by these discoveries, the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. And since 1936, the Olympic flame has been ceremonially lit at the Temple of Hera, using the sun's rays focused by a parabolic mirror - bridging antiquity and today's global Olympic movement ♥
