Skógafoss is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, located near the village of Skógar in the south. The waterfall boasts a drop of 60 meters (197 feet) and a width of 25 meters (82 feet), creating a mighty cascade that produces a constant mist. On sunny days, this mist often results in vivid single or double rainbows, adding to the site's allure.

The Skógá River, which feeds the waterfall, originates from the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Skógafoss marks the former coastline of Iceland; as the sea receded, the cliffs remained, forming a clear boundary between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands.

According to local legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure chest behind the waterfall. It's said that locals once found the chest but could only grasp a ring on its side before it vanished. This ring is now displayed at the Skógar Museum.

Visitors often notice Icelandic horses grazing in nearby fields. These sturdy, domesticated animals are known for their unique gaits and friendly nature. While they may appear to roam freely, they are owned and cared for by local farmers.

Skógafoss is also the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail, which leads between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. This trail allows hikers to explore more of Iceland's stunning landscapes ♥

Unless I'm very much mistaken, a path allows you to walk behind the waterfall—though not when there's this much water!

I love this picture... such freedom. My ancestry show I have distant Icelandic cousins... Someday I would love to go there.

I love the 11 horses. They have homes where they live between running the fields.

I just watched a video about Icelandic horses doing the Tolt gait. Fascinating!

The waterfall is great but the horses make it even better.
