I've seen a Pileated Woodpecker or two in the pines in my back yard, but they spook easily - I can't even approach the kitchen window without them taking off. This morning I saw one in the trees, and learned their "chuck, chuck" call, which helps me to know they're around.

I heard it again this afternoon, and from the bathroom window saw this bird at my feeder. I got the camera and carefully moved to where I could see her through the kitchen window to get a few shots. When I tried to move closer to the window, she flew - but this one (with some help from Photoshop) came out pretty well.

Thanks for your persistence in getting this great photo, and your use of Photoshop to give us this great puzzle.

It came out very well, Don. Glad you were able to slip up on this one. Thanks.

Well done!!! They are so elusive and skittish. How lucky you are to have them in your new yard! On the rare occasion we see them, they are usually tucked away in trees or in flight. Their call is oftentimes the only way we know that one is around (usually when camping).

The other birds are small, and the squirrels can't get to it. And I've plenty more in the garage. At this new place, since I put up the sunflower seed feeder, the suet lasts a long time, and I'll happily supply more if these birds frequent it.

Is she leaving something for the other birds and squirrels?
