The artwork in Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle is titled "On The Steps Of The Rialto, Venice" (1879-1883), and the artist is Henry Woods ♥

Henry Woods (22 April 1846 – 27 October 1921) was an English painter celebrated for his vivid, human-centered genre scenes in Venice.

Born in Warrington to a middle-class family, his father a pawnbroker, he won a scholarship to the South Kensington School of Art after studying at the Warrington School of Art.

Woods began his career illustrating for The Graphic in 1869 alongside Luke Fildes. He first visited Venice in 1876 and, inspired by its light and life, took residence there by 1878. He befriended a circle of expatriate artists, including Whistler and Sargent, and opened a studio on the Grand Canal.

His warm, detailed portrayals of market-people and canal-side scenes earned him associate and full membership of the Royal Academy (1882, 1893).

Woods resided in Venice until his death, passing away beside his easel in 1921.

Thank you Jigidi. The Rialto goes back a long way. It is an island in Venice, containing the old mercantile quarter of medieval Venice. The Rialto Bridge, completed in 1591, crosses the Grand Canal between Rialto and San Marco islands.

Now, what news on the Rialto?

SOLANIO

What news is there from the Rialto now?

SALERIO

Why, yet it lives there unchecked that Antonio hath a ship of rich lading wracked on the narrow seas

I was just at the Rialto Bridge in April. This spent two full days exploring the back alley's of Venice. Such a magical place.

It is a busy painting. Thanks for the puzzle.

So much going on in this painting! Every grouping of people has its own story.
