The artwork in Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle is titled "Ein Ball auf der Hängstatt" (1890), and the artist is Josef Engelhart ♥

Josef Engelhart (1864–1941) was an Austrian painter, sculptor, and one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession alongside Gustav Klimt.

Born in Vienna, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He continued his training in Paris and Munich, where he encountered modern trends that shaped his vibrant, often humorous style.

Engelhart was deeply rooted in Viennese culture and frequently depicted scenes of everyday life, society figures, and folklore with bold color and expressive brushwork. He served as president of the Secession and later became director of the Künstlerhaus.

Personally, Engelhart was known for his strong opinions and sharp wit. He published an autobiography in 1931, offering candid insights into the Viennese art world.

A passionate documenter of his time, he left behind a lively, sometimes satirical visual record of turn-of-the-century Austria, straddling the line between tradition and modernism. He died in Vienna at the age of 77.

If you are not on a floor, dancing could be easier on the grown. With all the HIGH HEALS, I would rather dance of the bare grown.

I was wondering where the music was coming from too. Is that a hurdy gurdy the man is cranking? I see that at least half of the women don't have shoes, so sad.

"Honey I meant to wash the clothes, but a dance party broke out!"

@rjt - I think the man in the background is an organ-grinder. Look at his right arm: he's holding -- and cranking? -- a long handle.
Two clotheslines are so high up, I think Engelhart put them there just for the painting.

Beautiful picture of people of all ages and size. Especially liked the one where the little girl is dancing with her grandfather. Thanks for sharing.

Where are musicians, how do they hang the clothes?

What an interesting scene!
