Jozef Teodor Mousson (1887–1946) was a Slovak painter of Hungarian origin, best known for his vibrant depictions of life in southern Slovakia, particularly in Michalovce.
His works capture everyday scenes, markets, and folk traditions with expressive colors and impressionistic brushwork. Despite enduring severe hardships, especially during and after World War II, his paintings remained bright and joyful, filled with sunlit market scenes and lively village life.
He was nicknamed the Painter of Zemplín for his unique portrayal of the region’s culture. Forced to leave Michalovce during the war, he later settled in Trenčín. Though overlooked for a time, his legacy was revived, and his works are now celebrated in Slovak museums.
