New feature: You can solve puzzles in any number of pieces with the resize feature

Over time, many of you have written to us because you saw puzzles that were speaking to you, but the size of the puzzles did not fit you – so you asked for a resizing feature.

And we have danced around this feature for a long time, wondering how to go about making it while taking good care of both the solver and the creator experience.

And now, your Jigidi world has gotten a whole lot bigger, as just a few days ago, we released a resizing feature that enables you to change the number of puzzle pieces on all puzzles on Jigidi ♥

New feature: resizing!

Many of you have already dived into using this feature, now experiencing Jigidi as an open sea of jigsaw puzzle opportunities. And we are beyond thrilled to see that.

To those who have yet to experience this new feature – let's go through it together and explore what it means for solvers and creators.

How do you activate it?

You find the option to resize puzzles on all puzzles on Jigidi. And it is located in the side panel of your chosen jigsaw puzzle:

Side panel

When you click 'Change a number of pieces,' you'll have the option to select a number of pieces to better suit your preference:

Change a number of pieces

Now, you will notice that the selection you meet on a puzzle is not endless. The selection is determined by mainly three things:

1. Image resolution

The quantity of pixels in an image determines the number of pieces it can be divided into. Our aim here is to not compromise the puzzle's quality. Consequently, a smaller image cannot be enlarged as much as a big image (meaning with many pixels) as it will make the puzzle pieces blurry.

Please note that the image, once uploaded to Jigidi, may be resized to best fit the number of pieces chosen by the creator, so it doesn't necessarily match the size the image had before uploading it to Jigidi (we are looking into this but cannot promise a time frame).

2. Keep a good user experience

You will find that the gaps between the smaller-sized choices are shorter, while the gaps between the larger-sized options are longer. There is a mathematical reason for this, but more importantly, the significance of scaling up with a few pieces is bigger in the lower numbers.

To strike a balance between offering ample options and maintaining a clean interface that facilitates a seamless puzzling experience, we do not offer the complete range of sizes possible for a given puzzle. We have chosen a selection of sizes that allows for a gradual progression of difficulty.

3. Inspire scaling difficulty level

One of the key elements in brain training is scalability in challenges. With this new feature, we hope to inspire you to scale up (or down) to gain new puzzle experiences. We're all creatures of habit, and sometimes we need a nudge to push it a bit further ?

It is the same puzzle

It is the same puzzle everyone solves, regardless of whether some have resized it to better fit their preference. This means that a resized solve counts on the original puzzle and that all solvers have access to the comment section on the puzzle.

You get to the comments section by choosing "Exit to comments and leaderboard" in the side panel of the puzzle.

Time tracking and completion messages follow the original size

As you see in the image below, time is not registered for your solve. That is because time tracking follows the original size. Consequently, only the original size has a leaderboard.

Solve puzzle side panel

In the same way, the completion message follows in the original size and not in resized puzzles.

(And don't worry, if there's a completion message on the puzzle you've chosen to resize, you'll be alerted so you can solve the original size to see it if you want.)

Puzzle creators: No need to post the same puzzle in more sizes

So many of you generous puzzle creators have created more sizes of the same puzzle, so your fellow puzzlers can solve it in a size that suits them.

Each account can post up to 4 puzzles a day. With the resizing feature, there is no longer a need to post the same puzzle several times – which means you can post a broader selection of images daily if you like.

I think the program to resize is limited to 2 extra pcs. Can't get more than that. ah yes, it must be the pixels.

Great feature for those of us with aging eyes that don't see as well as we used to. Thanks!

RandomWorship

Hey dennydavis - your way of looking for puzzles that you like in the size that you like, by using the size filter - is one of the big reasons that I will continue posting in all the size categories. If folks still want to resize them from there, they can. (❛ᴗ❛)

I like the feature but have a question. If people start creating only one size of a puzzle will it be the larger or the smaller size? The reason I ask it that I only do puzzles 400 pieces or bigger so I select that when looking through the puzzles. I usually only need to search around six pages or so to see all the newly added puzzles. Today I tried searching "all sizes" and found a puzzle I liked on the first page. When I switched to "huge" that puzzle was on page 10! I don't want to search through sixty or more page every morning unless I have to - I would rather spend that time doing puzzles.

CMBurke

I like the new resizing feature, and will continue using it, both as a solver and a puzzle maker.

The only thing I would ask, and it may not be possible, is that if I resize a puzzle, there would be a way for me to see how long it took me to do the puzzle, at the size I have chosen. For me it is not a huge issue, but I would like to be able to keep track for my own personal satisfaction.

Thank you very much, Jigidi, for the puzzles online puzzles!

bbr

You should probably also merge some of the duplicate images, and offer the size options at the start. e.g. "1,2,3,4 (bold)5, 6" etc. With the recommended size in bold, as uploaded by the creator. Perhaps different solution text messages as well?

bbr

Also, an increased difficulty setting "rotate pieces" would be fun. (and realistic)

bbr

Great and welcome addition!

On a side note, it might be nice to have a tag cloud - so it's easier to search for specific images to solve.

Please provide completion message also for resized puzzles.

Param

This is a great feature for those who couldn't solve the larger sizes.
Yet another way to find more solvers. Very clever indeed.
I will keep on posting several sizes because of those who like to compete on the leaderboard. If you resize a 400pcs puzzle to the fewest possible pieces you can solve it in seconds and it is presented as a 400pcs-solve. That feels not correct and a bit disrespectful.
I am a creator and like to see the true number of solves for the sizes I post.
I would like the resize to be revealed or for it to not be counted. Even the QUICK PLAY puzzle can be resized. Why not make the resize-feature available only to those who have an account? Jigidi also counts a creator's response to a comment as a comment. That makes me feel the same way as with this resize-feature. Jigidi makes me smile. That will not change. 🔆‿🔆.

needleworks

Absolutely love this feature!! Sometimes you want to do one of those 500 plus puzzles, but know you don't have the time. Yes, I can pause it but can't stop once I start!!

I didn't realise that this option was available. I deleted some puzzles because they were too small!! Now to learn how to look for this function and resize some puzzles. BTW this morning I did a puzzle of a horse with the young one standing behind. A message came up but disappeared. I cannot find the puzzle now. Anyone - can you help?

Thank you very much! I like it!

wonderful!! I LOVE this new feature! Thank you for making it happen!

thank you!

yellowstorm91

Thank you for making this possible. So looking forward to using this.

gramslife

You lovely Jigidi people are amazing! I use Jigidi almost daily and have my two monitors in extended view to give me more room to spread pieces.
I love the idea of resizing. I assume it will work up and down. Thank you.

RandyWI

I am loving the ability to change the size of the puzzles. I can't do the bigger ones (250+ pcs) d/t failing eyesight, but I like the challenge of 100+pcs. Being able to customize the size of the puzzle is a real gift. Thank you to TPTB.

Just wanted to change the size of a puzzle BUT there was no "change size" on the side panel. Oh stress this morning!?

RandomWorship

I understand the passion for the huge puzzle sizes, raakul! The folks that solve my puzzles in those 400+ piece size don't care so much about how long it takes. It's all about the challenge!! (❛ᴗ❛)

Thanks for that I prefer and do only 400+ puzzles and find that while travelling can still do these in the app if I only had the browser with the iPad would be restricted to very small pictures which I do not consider a puzzle

RandomWorship

Thanks for that, @raakul . The solvers who have mentioned to me that they use the iPad app, have been upset that the app is no longer supported too. The lack of the new resizing option being available in the iPad app, is one of the reasons I'm going to keep posting my puzzles in a range of sizes. (❛ᴗ❛)

The iPad app definitely does not have the feature for resizing but this appears to be a short term problem as the fanfare around the resizing option is in direct comparison to the deafening silence from the powers that be around the removal of the app from the AppStore. To date the app is still working for those that have it but for how long.

mirobi87

Thanks a lot for your kind work.

RandomWorship

Hey @Ms_Maddy ! Can I just check how you solve on your iPad - in the hopes that it might help the solvers who have told me that the resizing option doesn't work for them? They use the iPad app. Do you use that app too? Or are you solving in a browser window on your iPad? Fingers crossed that it's the app. 🤞🤞🤞

Ms_Maddy

I solve on an iPad and can use the resizing feature. Maybe try a refresh and delete cookies on the iPad? It does work!

I publish small puzzles (quick bites) and will keep doing that. You can always save and re-publish an image in a larger size. Think I’ve resized one puzzle in the past week 🤷‍♀️ Big timesaver for creators who used all their slots on one image in multiple sizes 😀 @Mischka

nakelly

Thanks, I've always wanted to be able to do this!

phantombill

This is a great new feature I plan to take advantage of soon. Thanks, Jigidi for being so attentive to your users needs.

pukkiepuk

Thank you! :-)) I like this new select pieces option, for now I'm able to solve more puzzles that I like then before. :-))

If the timer would be added back for puzzlers who rather prefer that, it should be fair to other puzzlers as well to also add the chosen number of pieces in which the puzzle was solved though... :-))

The problem I had with loading was caused by a technical error on my comp. (🌷◠‿◠)

Great Idea, but when you re-size the puzzle the clock looses the ability to stop the progress...

I love this new feature but would really like the timer to be added if possible. Thanks for all your hard work!

lovermier

Fantastic! I've often wished a certain puzzle could be larger. Now its possible.
Thank you!!!!

JuliaLolly

Brilliant! thank you

This is great! I prefer the larger piece puzzles and there are many that are not offered in the larger sizes.

wobblybear

So I tested this when I saw this new feature and subsequently since.

a) Is good news for posters who want to post more images a day without resizing.

b) Good news for players who can now pick and choose what size they want (at least more choices).

But...

be aware and I have tested this (and will remain so unless Jigidi changes this), that...

c) an image can go up to 500+ pieces and you do an image at 99 it may only go up to 356 or 400.
doing it at 120 should cover all bases from images 9 to 500+
You will be giving less choices the smaller you make the image.

d) I did not like and now see comments from people who don't like doing images they choose and it does NOT track, so no one can tell how well an image is doing.

e) For people who like to track or see what sort of puzzles are popular so they can do more of those, you have no real way of seeing yet.

Conclusion:

I suggest (at least for now)

Posters: to post images at 110 or more if you WANT to COVER all sizes from 9 to 500+ (where allowed)*
Players: Check images at this size if you want the most choices.

Example:
doing an image at 99 may give choices up to say 384.
doing the same image at 110 may give choices up to 500+

*NOTE:
Some pictures may be be fine at size 99 as they may only ever go up to e.g. 384 no matter if you do them at 88, 99, or 120.

Checking each image to see if it will go to maximum size is can be a pain, by the way.

Let's hope Jigidi, can sort this, or some posters may leave, but then people are always coming and going.

As of 21st June 2023 (CE).

Bluebonnet

@Nana54 (and all others who hope creators will continue to post multiple sizes): I suggest you leave comments on your favorite type and size of puzzles to let their creators know your preferences. Otherwise, how will they know?

I think this is a great idea but unfortunately having just changed from an android tablet to an IPad it is unfortunately not available to me.
I hope that the creators who post their puzzles will continue as I have been a jigsaw addict since a child and find that with deteriorating eyesight this really is a sanity help😀

Jodibs

Excellent! There are many large puzzles I wanted to do, and now I can! Thank you for Jigidi’s continual improvement!

It is not working--the gift of resizing

Becca48

YEA! WOW!! COOL!!! I have had to ask creators to resize their puzzles many times because I work them on my phone. Every time the response is, "Yes, of course!" 😊, and I have appreciated such kindness.
This is wonderful! Thank you!

PaulL

This is a great new feature. I like it!

Thank you Jigidi - I have carpal tunnel and my "in progress" puzzles are no longer saved for some reason. Also, I would need a 50" monitor to solve and view the very large piece puzzles! Jigidi rocks :) Sun 6/18/23

BJM_3K

great idea :-)

beyondwords

@Bluebonnet Thank you for your reassurance that "solves of resized puzzles are counted as solves." That's all I really need for now. It's time to get some experience as solver and as creator. ~Patsy

beyondwords

@RandomWorship It's great if many puzzle creators will continue to publish in multiple sizes--giving solvers the best of both worlds. But many other creators haven't normally done that. I welcome the new resizing option especially to downsize huge puzzles but also to upsize some tiny puzzles that I'd never bother to complete. Let's see if this makes any difference in my enormous backlog of bookmarked puzzles. As a creator, for now when possible I'll probably continue my practice of posting a pair of similar photos in different small & medium sizes. But I might change as our experience evolves. ~Patsy

RandomWorship

@beyondwords - this doesn't quite address what you're asking, but is related. The regular folks who solve and comment on my puzzles are saying that they prefer my puzzles as I currently post them - in multi-sizes across the size categories. Another two reasons to keep doing that too, have come to light as well - iPad app solvers don't have access to the resizing options. And solvers who look for puzzles by the sizing filters on the main page won't see the puzzle unless it appears in that size! So I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing now, and that way the solvers get the best of both worlds. (❛ᴗ❛)

Bluebonnet

@OwenKL I'm certain that the owners are reading the comments here, but I'm almost certain that they're not going to answer anyone's questions here. They might put your suggestion on their radar, but it won't be among the first to be implemented, because not many puzzle creators post completion messages. I have two suggestions for you, neither of them perfect:

1. You could post each and every image in one of the smallest sizes, either in addition to one in a larger size or as a standalone.

2. You could post your poem in the space below the puzzle so it could be read even if the viewer did not solve the puzzle.

I hope your health is improving. 🙂

Bluebonnet

@beyondwords Solves of resized puzzles are counted as solves, so as a puzzle creator, I can see the total number of times the puzzle has been solved. I can't see the stats on each possible size, but I don't really need to have that information. Each solve is a "like." I guess anyone, creator or solver, who cares most about competing will have to stick to the original published size.

beyondwords

What kind of feedback are puzzle owners getting about how many times and ways their puzzles have been resized? Or how many times the resized puzzles have been completed?

OwenKL

I'm a poet, and the pictures are secondary to letting people see my completion poems. I can understand not having it pop up when the puzzle is resized, but couldn't you let it still be looked up from the side panel, please? It doesn't even need to be only available after the puzzle is completed.
A lot of riddle puzzles will also require this!

sheila60

That is a marvelous idea Jigidi. Many thanks, I will try it soon.

jerrys

I'm "test driving" the new feature and have received some feedback from solvers of puzzles at sizes other than as posted. Is it possible to tie their solves to some form of leaderboard to determine if I will continue this or continue to post the images at three or four sizes?

amanaplan

Great!

Obrigado

Thank you, Jigidi team. I have just tried it this morning; it was interesting, but I probably won't use it much.
Anyway, this is an opportunity to thank you for all the work you do maintaining, updating and improving Jigidy. I'm sure you enjoy the challenge of inventing new tweaks, and there have been some marvelous ones during the few years since I joined - as a solver not a creator.
I'm hooked - a bit too compulsively at times, but its a great way to de-stress, and also to relax when sleep eludes me.

Have been using this and love it !

Love it!!!

This opens up so much for us. Thanks!!

Bluebonnet

@krasnopo @Wylie The new feature does not have a limit of 450 pieces. The number of pieces you can choose when you resize depends on the size of the image posted by the puzzle creator. Here are two 600-piece puzzles:

https://www.jigidi.com/created.php?id=08OOEFYT

https://www.jigidi.com/created.php?id=C6E4Y3FH

Bluebonnet

@krasnopo There are still 600-piece puzzles. They are in the "Huge" category with other sizes of 400+.

Bluebonnet

@leor888 I have been asking for a "mass move" capability for YEARS. I hope they'll get around to it someday.

As the iPad version does not support resizing then unless creators continue to publish puzzles in different sizes then choice for solvers will be severely restricted resulting in a significantly worse experience

This is a wonderful update. Thank you.

gogogo

I'm enjoying this new feature, Jigidi. Thank you for this improvement!

This works great! Thanks for this!

csarmientoj

To the Jigidi Team
Many thanks for this addition and for being always looking for innovation. Greetings and a nice weekend to all of you.

I stopped doing puzzles. There are no more 600 pc puzzles.

Wylie

This is a great new feature, but since it is limited to 450 pieces, I hope creators continue to post in the 450 - 600 size. Since I do mostly the mosaic types, the 576 size is my favorite.

MNBrown

@grenada I saw this and immediately thought of you! Neat option, have already used it a few times myself! :-)

det er utroligt at I stadig kan finde nye muligheder - nu mangler kun at vi kan farvelægge gåderne så de passer til den enkeltes temperament - ha ha

One feature I still miss is the selection of pieces to move them. Now you have to do that one by one (or move the complete jigsaw)

Maybe my question has already been answered. Will resized puzzles still contribute to our stats of how many puzzles solved, total and daily? That's actually more important to me than the leaderboard.

Thanks jigidi for continuing to make this site the best puzzle site I know of. I use to use other puzzle sites and since I found jigidi I have not searched for other sites. I am hooked on jigidi and thanks for listening to our suggestions.

Thank you for this great added feature!!

Bluebonnet

PUZZLE CREATORS, FYI Today I wanted to post my puzzles in my standard size, 63 pieces, for my longtime solvers who might be unaware of the new feature and would be put off by a 400+ puzzle. I discovered that if I enlarge my starting image as I described below and publish a "Huge" puzzle, it can be resized by a solver to a very small number of pieces. But if I publish the same image as a 63-piece puzzle, it can be resized only to a limit of 252 pieces, so anyone who wants a larger version still has to ask me for it. I suppose this may become less important over time.

thanks a lot! too many more options to enjoy!!!

ljcowles

Thank you as both a puzzle submitter and puzzle 'put-er-together-er'.

charmedward

Honestly game-changing to me. I've posted multiple sizes every day for years and I love being able to provide more image variety now! The only downside is the lack of leader board for custom sized puzzles, but overall I love this!

Great addition! But we competitive solvers want our favorite puzzle creators to post in lots of sizes!
