In 1898 EJ White was working as a journalist in Alaska. He got a job writing for the Klondike Nugget on the condition that he increased sales. After a huge snow storm hit, White wrote about this new creature called the ice worm. Everyone freaked out so he kept writing about it. So now, every year in Cordova they celebrate Cordova Ice Worm Day with a winter carnival, including an elected King and Queen.

However, as unlikely as it might appear, there are species of segmented worms that live their entire lives on and in glacial ice. Ice worms were officially discovered during 1887 by geologist George Frederick Wright on the Muir Glacier in southeastern Alaska.

If you want to know what I am celebrating tomorrow feel free to return to this page after 10 pm (GMT - UK) when I will post a link to preview tomorrow's celebration puzzle.

I hadn't either.. until I read about this festival!!

pkin38

Here I go again catching up ... Never heard of a ice worm

monza006

LOL - Thanks - Heidi - I could probably get interested and then I wouldn't mind so much... at least there is a reason for what he does, and it's to make animal's lives better... or so I assume!!!

Quite right PJ - I think it was an excellent idea for them to decide to celebrate the ice worms and party!!! Thanks :~))

Oh dear, well, there are all kinds of animals, and I guess there is a room for iceworms too, lol.
I think it's real fun that Cordova made a winter festival of it - great excuse for partying in the cold dark winter, lol,
PJ

You'd hate living in my home, Mandy. My husband is a Veterinary Parasitologist. That means he works with worms in livestock. He gets worms in the mail. He hatches out worm larvae and ships them to people all over. Most of our dinner table discussions revolve around worms.

I know what you mean Ardy - I can be a bit squeamish about touching worms.. but they do serve a very useful purpose, although no-one seems to know what the ice worms actually do!!!

I used to hate seeing the worms when I went fishing Lil!! I'm sure piggy is OK - I think she was skating, and the ice plenty thick enough... and she's keeping warm with all her exercise!!!

Thanks Barb - I'm not sure how we can join in the celebration today.... but it's fun to know it's happening in Cordova!!

Thanks Hanne - I didn't know about them either!!

Oh golly, I bet ordinary worms don't stand a chance near your chickens Edie... they become luxury items!!! LOL

2dogs7cats

Thanks for the info and images Mandy. No iceworms here but regular worms don't stand a chance if they live in my chicken area :-)))

Elfie

Oh, I just love this!! Didn't know about the worms, thanks so very much for the info, Mandy!!

Such an interesting celebration today. Love the images with piggy trying to slide across the ice. Thanks for the info, Mandy. :-))

Ardy, worms aren't bad if you are fishing, and they are good for the garden. But glaciers, no thank you, I'm sure there is a reason for them, but it is beyond me, I have enough to think about on a daily basis. I hope piggy is OK and the ice is thick enough. Now will somebody get her a nice warm coat, and maybe some pea soup, (no ham bone required)... Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, I think I got her mad. I can't do anything right. Have a good day, and do take care of piggy.

Interesting information, Mandy. Don't think I want to go to Alaska to help them celebrate though. I don't like worms. If I'm digging in the garden an wearing heavy gloves they don't bother me but the idea of handling a worm with my bare hands gives me shivers. Ewwww. Wonderful images. Looks like a fun time. Thanks.
