OK It's one of the first home water gas fired heaters, the clod water was fed into the heater via the right pipe, the center is the gas supply, the left pipe is the hot water. this could still work today if connected.
Come on RD - 1880's is too broad a "hint" - I wasn't around yet - not even a twinkling in the eye for a couple of generations of ancestors. Come on!!!! Inquiring minds want to know.
Does it have something to do with grain? It looks like a pipe should be attatched to the top, and grain should come out the hole near the point to fill a bin, wagon, silo or something.....
