One presumes some legislators, or their aides, use it.

"The Iowa State Law Library is located on the Capitol's second floor. The law library features four ornamental balconies with spiraled cast-iron railings and circular staircases at each end. The library houses a collection of approximately 100,000 volumes, and is one of the largest combined law libraries in the United States. The public is welcome to visit the library and may also use the books.

Original gaslights or reproduction gaslights, now wired for electricity, have been retained throughout the room. The tile floor and stained glass ceiling in the law library date back to 1884. As part of the Capitol renovation project, restoration painters completed work on the ceiling in the law library in 1997." Well, okay then... [grumble] ;-)

Last I checked, Iowa had the highest literacy rate in the country and has held that title for many years. To spend that much on a library, even for their legislators, probably was okay with them. Plus, public buildings back in the day had style and exuded craftsmanship pretty much everywhere I believe. So, yeah, it's your personal property tax situation talkin' here I'm afraid, Andy. :-)

Better yet Leanne, can you imagine how much it cost whenever they built it - back in the 1880s, I guess. I can't help but wonder if most Iowans would be proud of their legislators' law palace or more like "They spent our money on WHAT?" It is very elegant, but was it ever necessarily so? That's the tax-bruised Dris speaking here, I guess.

I would love to spend time in here, Gayle. Glad you all appreciated its elegance, and thanks for saying so!

Just beautiful! Wouldn't it be nice to explore this library for several hours? I suspect the only people who frequent it now are the employees who are digitizing the 100,000 volumes. Nice puzzle, Pat. :-)

Bill_I_Am

That is quite an elegant library!

It's a magnificent library! Can you imagine how much a place like this would cost today to build? Thanks Pat.
