Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The 18th century masonry farmhouse was the private residence of Continental Army Major General William Alexander, Earl of Stirling. Lord Stirling used this house during the winter of 1777-1778 when the Continental Army camped at Valley Forge, PA before the arrival of Baron von Steuben who aided General Washington in retraining the Continental Army in the spring of 1778.

When renovating it, the builders used stucco to blend the original historic structure (finished with exposed field stone and ridge pointing) with newer additions. Hard cement stucco was removed and a lime rich stucco mix was applied to the walls with a lime wash façade.

That's a wonderful old house.
Thanks Suzy. It's a great picture too!!

goingsilver

Love the building and interesting info and comments too! Thanks!

Had to know the answer, Beekay! It was gnawing on me! : )
I love the original old glass, Warb. The waves and imperfections in it give the glass some real class.
Me jest, snooker? Pshaw!!!
Didn't see any cannon balls in this one, smllpkg. It was a lot more peaceful (especially in the winter) than Gettysburg was.
That's what I remember as well, Lunie-a door for the boys and one for the girls. I don't think this was ever a school though.
Thanks, islandflyer! It's always nice to have you stop by.
Jo......I live in NYS.....but quite north of Upstate Ulster County! :) We live in Schoharie County-just west of Albany. NYS apples are the best!
Isn't it great, abel? I love the stonework! As Jo said, there are many stone buildings similar to this in New York State as well-especially in the canal towns.
Yeah, partner! Camping gear is at the ready. Must mean it will rain next week!!!! :)
Hi, Ardy! Looks like rain, but the forecast changes so frequently, I shouldn't even bother looking! It's not been too hot here-but your temperatures have been AWFUL! Stay cool, you young thing!

Thanks, Suzy. Was to Valley Forge once many, many years ago and remember nothing about it. I think I was a kid. Happy camping. Hope the weather will be decent. Being anywhere without a/c right now is not a pleasant thought!!!! Am I getting old?

morris186

Yaay!! camping season begins. :)

abel

A fascinating old building, Suzy.

islandflyer

Another great photo and story to go with it, Suzy. I really enjoy these old buildings that you frame nicely with the foliage.

jacki2

my kind of old building suzy. thanks so much for posting these. if you are ever in upstate new york, check out the towns of stoneridge and high falls, were i used to live (and swam in the river in the middle of town). you would love the buildings there, especially the duepuy canal house. lots of history too, and the best apple orchards anywhere.

Dilubreuer

I remembered a school building with several doors...

smllpkg101

No cannonballs still lodged in this one?

Six miles fast on a hot day? You jest. Interesting building. :)

warbler

The windows look alot like the white buildings windows in the other puzzle. Lots of little panes. Most glass was sent from England by ship and little panes shipped better with less breakage.

Beekay

Thanks for the link Suzy. Good sleuthing!

With the troops there, I'm sure it was quite different than the farmland it was originally, and is again today, Toto. For sure they didn't have gigantic cinnamon rolls as big as plates. :)

This is the main house, Lunie. The small building is on the property, not sure what it was used for-perhaps a stable or storage? This building was not open to the public, and I took the photo from a good distance away.

Dilubreuer

Is this the tiny one in your other post Suzy?

Toto

Fascinating building - I imagine it the surroundings looked much different back in 1777-78.

Have done a little research about the doors. I think, in this case, the double doors may have been purposed one for daily use and one for more formal use. This is an interesting website with many possible answers!

Beekay

Yes I see we all have the same ?'s and thoughts :-D

pumpkinhead

Ha ha, Beekay! We were both writing the same thought at the same time! :)

A stairway would be an excellent guess to that window, Swiftie. I was wondering about the two doorways. What is your guess about those? Thank you for stopping!

Beekay

Beautiful farmhouse. I find the two front doors interesting as well as the one offset window. Perhaps that window is in a stairway or hallway...

Swiftie

Interesting house with a history! I wonder about the window just above the door on the right. Is it on a stairway? Thanks for giving the story of this great old house!
