Thursday night I was chatting with my neighbor, and he asked me if I'd seen any deer in the meadow lately, since they normally see them grazing their regularly, and we'd seen them often enough earlier in the year. I said I hadn't, yet when we looked we saw what looked like a fawn at the edge of the woods, and as we watched a doe appeared as well. The fawn looked pretty small for this late in the summer; it seems like it was a late birth; perhaps the hard winter delayed mating, although we've seen some young that were clearly born at the normal time.

Then Friday towards evening I saw a deer well out in the meadow, and when I put the camera on him, it was a buck! His antlers weren't fully grown, and are in velvet. He's a spikehorn - and we don't usually see (identifiable) bucks in the open; they work the edges, and are far warier than the does. Since this is his first year with antlers, he's not the father; I wonder if he's last year's fawn?

I saw him glancing back at the woods a couple of times; as I watched, a fawn and then a doe worked into view.

Yesterday, in the morning I saw another buck in the meadow, and a fawn - and then another! The two fawns were cavorting about, but by the time I got the camera in a position for a good picture, I could only see the doe at the edge of the spruce, and the buck was nowhere to be seen - but it was clearly not the family I'd seen the day before, so maybe we'll see some more activity now.
