Thanks for the compliment, Goingsilver. My first language is Dutch actually. It all started when I visited Breendonk (google it and look at the images) in Belgium. It was a 'durchgangslager', a transition camp. From there the prisoners were transported to camps throughout Europe. That visit made such an impression on me, that I wanted to know more and read all I could find about it. I even got some ashes I brought from Auschwitz. I keep them in a sort of glass shrine. Even made my own video of that camp. I even lectured about this topic in school. I always say: I was born after the war and I sure would like to keep it that way :-)
Wow starlord, you have an impressive library! Can I ask what started such profound interest? I can only imagine the emotions anyone would experience on visiting Auschwitz. I'm afraid I don't think I could ever experience them myself.
I imagine the Schindlers Ark / List books are pretty much the same thing. Sorry, I hadn't realised English wasn't your first language, as your written English is perfect!
Thanks, Goingsilver. I didn't read the book Schindler's Ark, but I did read Schindler's List. Basically the book on which the film was based. Or vice versa? When I was in Poland to visit Auschwitz, we even visited some of the places where the film was shot. We were there with a group and our guides were 2 men who had spent time in Auschwitz as prisoner. Walking around in those barracks is so overwhelming. Being on the very same spot where it all took place, is beyond imagination. I've got some 7 or 800 books on concentration camps. I've read them all. And as far as Schindler's Ark is concerned: I'm not sure it's translated in Dutch. Reading a book in English takes too long as I do have to look up words in a dictionary :-(
That is a pretty powerful image. Thanks for showing. I'm not a fan of the film but I'm with you on Schindler's List. Have you read the book - Schindler's Ark? I'd recommend it, though it is one you need a box of tissues with even more than with the film version!
Hey, we share an interest, BentleyD. I visited Auschwitz some 15 years ago. Maybe I'll scan some of the pictures I made then and turn them into puzzles. Would that be appropriate? Offensive? But it's a museum and the posting could be considered to be a tribute to the prisoners. Nothing wrong with that... I think.
Thanks for your comment, Gary. It was a sad event indeed. But I was amazed by the joining of two images. Think it was a great idea and very well done too. I've seen the movie only once. But my 'once a year movie' is Schindler's List. And I get the same feelings you got :-) Tearjerkers are not exactly my kind of movie.
Such a sad, sad story! Every time my wife and I watch the Titanic, and we do it at least once a year because it's one of her favorites, I cry in the end! Of course, I'm a big strong manly man so I can say that out loud! L.O.L.
