Thanks cookin and Patti. The avocet returned to the UK to breed for the first time in 100 years, following the second world war. Coastal areas had been flooded to help prevent invasion and these new wetlands provided suitable habitat once more. This is where the famous RSPB Minsmere reserve is now.
