On 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 191 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme.

The 2013 theme is "Watching the weather to protect life and property," with the subtitle "Celebrating 50 Years of the World Weather Watch". This theme focuses attention on the crucial role of meteorological services in strengthening safety and resilience to weather events. It also pays tribute to the World Weather Watch, a foundation programme of the WMO that will mark its fiftieth anniversary in 2013.

Don't forget to return to this page after 10pm (GMT) for a link to preview tomorrow's celebration.

You're quite right Michelle - probably in more parts of the world than we care to know about!! Its THE endless topic of conversation in the UK!!!

LOL, Hanne. Being Canadian...ditto! (Many, many moons ago I coined the phrase...it's weathering out...since we do seem to discuss this so much. Lo and behold, great or perhaps not-so-great minds think alike and now I see it's on the internet. Nothing new under the sun, eh?)

monza006

I know exactly what you mean Hanne!!

Elfie

We really don't talk about anything but the weather here either!! If we hadn't the weather it would be very silent!! Thanks so very much Mandy!!

monza006

We do, thanks Pat :~)

pkin38

Oh good we get to celebrate the weatherman....Thanks Mandy

Barb, the weather is definitely the no. 1 topic for conversation in the UK!!! I've not experienced any dreadful weather recently, although in the north of the country they've had blizzards.

thanks Michelle, I didn't stumble across Earth Hour in my research... it's just begun locally!!!

Thankfully they seem to be getting more accurate year on year, Edie. Thanks for visiting.

PJ, you're so right, my lessons at school on predicting the weather confused the heck out of me!!!

Thanks whatnauts, I was very impressed with the accuracy of some of the recent severe warnings we've been given.

Thanks Wendy :~)

whatnauts is right on spot. I can't think of anything to add to whatnauts' wise weather words.

Thanks, monza. We all tend to make fun of our weather people, but the meteorologists have an important function, particularly with tracking storms. Thanks for another interesting 'Who Knew' puzzle.

Great and wonderful images and most interesting info, Mandy. And yes - weather prediction is important - and difficult to make.

I hope they are more accurate in predicting world weather events than they are in our day to day weather. LOL
Thanks Mandy

Thank you to, Mandy! Great images to showcase a wonderful organization (the idea of using stamps here was very inventive).

Also, while we're on the subject of climate, it's also Earth Hour today between 8:30-9:30pm local time. Don't forget to shut off non-essential lights and power everyone! ;-D

And what's the number one topic of conversation in Canada (and I suspect other countries too)? WEATHER!!!
Wonderful organization, Mandy. Thanks for the images, the history, and bringing this to our attention through your Who Knew puzzle.
Hope the weather isn't as bad as predicted where you are. Take care and have a great weekend! :-)

monza006

Thanks Ardy - I loved the rainbow image. We're expecting bad weather, but we've only had rain so far... who knows what tomorrow will bring though. Thankfully I have few days off, so won't have to travel to work in bad weather.

Mandy, Thank you. The rainbow picture is fantastic. It's a great service this organization is doing. They will probably never know how many lives they have saved. I had never heard of this organization before and it's been around for 50 years. Makes me wonder where I've been. :-)

Are you experiencing the blizzard conditions with heavy snow that Su (Trouble) is?
