These are all from the Indo-Pacific area and are all Murex or Rock snails and they are all carnivorous predators. The ancient Phoenicians would produce a rare dye from the mucus of some of these which was called royal purple and used to colour royalty robes. There are hundreds of varieties of Murex and dad had most of them in drawers. These are a few of the best.

They really are and among some of the oldest known shells. Numerous species so you should have a fun time. If I can help with names of some dealers let me know. Dad had a few good ones in the States. Happy Murex!!

Surreal_Heidi

I'm just starting to collect Murex now. I only have 17 species so far. They REALLY are cool shells.

Robbiel

O.M.G. What a gorgeous collection! And, it's all in mint condition! I wish my dad could see these! Wow, he would probably flip out over them! L.O.L. He still has a whole lot of shells and the like from his past history as a Deep-Sea-Diver! He's still not sure what to do with it all, so I said, hand it all down to me dad! I sure hope he doesn't decide to sell any of it, because I'd like to have all of it, the whole kit and kaboodle, as he's got quite a collection and it's all in mint condition too! In fact, his whole collection is all labeled and in protected glass casings too! Well, here I've gone on and on so sorry to take up so much of your time, it's back to putting puzzles together for me! Thanks again!...Monica

Not that I want to sound like Dobbiel...but I have that one in the lower left-hand corner...hopefully there are only two in the world! LOL

Thank you Robbie.
I am learning a ton about predators. I had read about the royal purple dye. Pretty amazing collection. Thank you for sharing it with us.

robryan

LOL! pg - you are crazy!!
MMM!! Snail mucous !!! Bet they didn't tell the royals where that colour came from!! On second thoughts - it was probably a lot nicer than other old dyes!! Thanks Robbie - very interesting.

photogent

I don't know about you mate but if I had these in MY draws it might cause a wee bit of a problem but I guess to each their own.

Robbiel

Hi PA, thanks very much.

Hi Healer, these are all my dad's collection which are in a museum now. He has collected for 75 years, so had lots of time to keep adding to them, thanks.

Healer

I can't get over the vastness of you and your Dad's collection! Beautiful!

Lovely collection.
