I think the fancied resemblance of the leaves to cookies prompted someone to give it its name. The leaves are very fleshy; I think it is related to the jade plant (yes, the common house plant). It is a very obliging succulent - - can be easily kept to a manageable size, propagates very easily, and requires very little care. It is one of my favorite "lazy person's" plants. Oh yes - - and it has no thorns or other hostile parts!
Probably not. We do occasionally have light frosts here that don't seem to bother Cookie, but a hard freeze would be another matter. In my back yard is a clone of the tall cactus in another of my puzzles today; in 2003 it was cold enough to kill the edges of it, whence new growth comes, and it has stood there unchanged (but still green) ever since.
