Today is the 150th Anniversary of the London Underground Network - The Tube.

When 'The Tube' went operational in 1863, geographical maps of the network were produced to show passengers where the trains travelled. As the network grew, and changed, it became increasingly difficult to accurately represent it. In 1931 Harry Beck, a Tube engineer devised this functional map of the system. Initially, in 1932, a few hundred were distributed to passengers, which proved a great success. In 1933, 700,000 copies were printed which all sold out in one month.

The map has changed very little since Beck's version was printed and has become as much an icon of London as Trafalgar Square, or Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) on the Palace of Westminster.

In 2009, the Tube map came in second in a vote for the all-time classic British design, losing out on first place to the Concorde trans-Atlantic airliner.

Here is another factoid: There are 109 journeys that can be made on the Tube, that would be quicker to walk!
