Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Yes, the lean-to was actually there. This is pretty much the classic Adirondack lean-to; you find them sprinkled around the trails to provide low-impact weather-resistant camping (you find them along the Appalachian Trail as well).

They are of log construction, with shingle roofs (I remember how much a sheaf of shingles weighs - kudos to those who packed them in!), and a flat board floor set up off the ground for security from moisture and critters (although you might get an early morning visit from a porcupine, or a night-time visit from a raccoon). Definitely preferable to trying to find a level spot for a tent, and a smooth enough area to sleep on. And it saves a *lot* of time and fuss if it's raining!

Protocol is well established. Replace the firewood you used (notice some small wood inside the lean-to, so there will be dry kindling for the next user); pack out all your waste, leave it clean. Also, if you're burying waste (the old way, now frowned on), burn all cans and containers before burying them, so animals won't smell the food and dig them up. Also, this is bear country; a bear cache (sealed bag which can be suspended from a tree) is mandatory. You don't want a bear smelling food in your pack and climbing into the lean-to with you to find it!

This one is in excellent condition. They are maintained by ADK volunteers (AMC along the Appalachian Trail) and by a state-sponsored YCC (Youth Conservation Corp).

I'm still a bit mystified as to why there's one here on a short loop trail, both ends of which are in a state campground. I guess it's a way for campers to spend a night in the woods without having to pack much very far. It may also be a location for parties; that's an issue with other lean-tos which are easily acccessible.

[Confession: I didn't actually make it this far before taking a break. I stopped at the downed tree along the trail in the last picture - planted my staff, sat back against the tree, had an apple and some water, and chatted with the hikers going past. I asked one family of three (man, woman, teenage boy) if there was actually a lean-to up ahead, and they assured me there was. It turned out that it was only a few hundred yards farther.]

The good news? We're more than half-way to the top.

The bad news? Now it gets steeper!

Yeah, as if the existence of the lean-to wasn't enough evidence that you were on the trail!
