This barn also caught my eye. The siding is unpainted and falling off; windows are broken or missing - but the barn is still in use!

Yes, it's certainly cheaper in many instances to build a simpler new building. Also, the process of farming has changed, and the style of the old barns - built with high mows on the upper stories for loose hay (repurposed for baled hay), with cattle and other livestock below, doesn't fit modern farming methods. The newer round bales, weighing more than a half ton apiece, can't typically be stored in the old mows - if they're stored at all, and not left in situ for feeding. Dairy operations have gotten bigger, and I'm not sure it's even practical to have a small dairy herd these days.

An interesting old outbuilding. I see that it had been added onto at one time - on the left hand side in this photo.

Unfortunately so many do not have the wherewithal to maintain old outbuildings. Someone told my mate in recent years that it is cheaper to build a pole building than to rescue an old barn.
