The origins of Walking the Dog Day are obscure. Presumably it was started by an animal lover, or maybe it was the dogs themselves that got together and decided they needed a way of getting us humans off the couch and on the end of a lead.

Whoever started it, this is an easy day to take part in. Make sure you have suitable clothing and footwear for the conditions, grab your mobile phone, a bottle of water, some plastic bags for picking up – you know what – and away you go.

The great thing about walking dogs is that you can do it almost anywhere. Down the street, in the park, on the beach, the possibilities are endless. The exercise is good for you and for the dog, and since dogs are very social animals you’ll meet other owners too. No dog? Borrow one from a neighbour and get walking!

Thanks to Rich Sutherland of daysoftheyear.com for sharing the information.

If you want to know what I am celebrating tomorrow feel free to return to this page after 10 pm (GMT - UK) when I will post a link to preview tomorrow's celebration puzzle.

Great illustrations, Mandy. Since my neighbors don't have dogs guess I'll need to find an old toothbrush and do as Hanne suggests. Actually though my back yard neighbors do have dogs and they (the dogs) bark a lot. Thanks so much. Have a great holiday.

Mandy - fabulous!!!!!!! Great idea - and the images you chose are hilarious, a scream, adorable, cute, cool - love them. The little toddler and the wonderfully patient big dog is my fave.

Hanne - thank you for a most hilarious suggestion - I second it - all for walking.... (if I can find an old toothbrush LOL)
