Wijck. (pronounce Week)
In the south of the Netherlands is the city Maastricht. The city lies on the River Maas. Both in the East and in the West Bank. Thus, the situation today. But if we go back in time we see that Maastricht was on the West bank. On the East bank was another very old town, called Wijck. Somewhere (more then an age ago) the two towns became one city. The train station of Maastricht is built in 1853 in the neighborhood Wijck. And the area around the station was populated by wealthy people of Maastricht. So if you lived in Wijck in that time you was wealthy. :-) Wijck is a part of the center of Maastricht. Nowadays there are lots of shops, restaurants bars and so on. Lots of tourists come to visit Maastricht, not many know they arrive by train in Wijck.
We are going to visit Wijck, not the rest of Maastricht. Actually, that's a shame because Maastricht is very beautiful. But Wijck is the town where Beth's roots are, so please enjoy Wijck.

This photo shows the train station, the place where we arrive.

Hi Willy, then you know more about Wijck as I do. It's about halve an age ago I was there and never for long.

ladywil

just read the comment about Van Wyck...Here they do not know van as separate part of the fam. name. They put it all together, like van Eijck becomes Vaneyk. The ij they also don't know. My maiden name has a ij in it and I should have changed it to y. But i kept is as i and j and it is terrible the way they pronounce that. That was a big mistake.

ladywil

I have been here many times....my parents lived in Maastreeg

puzzeljac

Thanks Raaike Tek and Lyndee.
Raaike misschien ben je er wel eens per ongeluk geweest, ga je dadelijk de foto's herkennen.☺ Tek I found it so interesting, I had to share☺ Lyndee, Train stations are not really the place to buy souvenirs. I wonder or they have them. ☺

lyndee

That's one big train station. Bet they've got some interesting souvenirs in there.

tekchal

Very impressive train station. And the information is really interesting.

Raaike

Dank je, Ank, goed om weten.

puzzeljac

And now we crossed Cathy. ☺ I'm glad you do Cathy. Is everything okay? Hugs♥

puzzeljac

Hi Beth we crossed. I'm not sure I understand quit well. You mean the family name became Van Wyck? And yes "IJ" does not exist in English, so it had to become "Y" ☺

cevas

What a beautiful train station!!
I'm glad to be joining this new tour. Thank you Ank.

puzzeljac

Thanks friends. I can remember I was there, almost a halve age ago. ☺ Wow, that long:-((( ☺ It is a beautiful station.
Lorna I agree, it sounds funny☺
Raaike Wijck is een deel van het centrum (volgens Wikipedia). Het ligt op de oost oever.

ebkrueg

Thanks, Ank!! The name in the US became Van Wyck and they wound up in New Amsterdam, before those pesky British. :)
