A cruise around The Cheshire Ring, Rochdale Canal (2)
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
Narrowboats Walrus and Blue Roan, about to turn onto the Ashton Canal at Ducie Street Junction, after leaving Dale Street Lock (No. 84).
The Rochdale Canal was closed by the early 1950's, except for the section between the Castlefield and Ducie Street Junctions. By the mid 1960's the nine locks through Manchester city had become almost unpassable.
Fortunately the short stretch, through Manchester, was restored at the same time as the Ashton and Peak Forest Canals, and re-opened in 1974. It was not until 2002, that the entire length of the Rochdale Canal to Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire, was navigable again.
