There is a town near where I live and they tapped trees in their town to make maple syrup as a fund raiser for the school.

I just noticed this am that one of the elementary schools in my area is tapping trees and selling the sap for people to make their own syrup. I think it is only a matter of boiling it down to reduce the amount of water. It could certainly be done on a small scale on a stove/range -- what ever term is used in various parts of the country. ; )
