It's actually not a seaweed in the way I would think of it. It is annual herb that grows in salt mud flats. So it's kind of a weed that grows in sea marsh areas. It's a member of the sea-blite family. This particular kind grows up green in the spring and then turns red in autumn.
I'm so glad you all found it interesting. I was kind of astounded by it. :)
