It's an unforgettable experience to see one, Canoekaw. Your mom's memory from back in the 70s testifies to that.
I didn't know that, Don, but that makes sense -- Woody DOES look like a pileated!

dondi

Not surprising, canoekaw - Woody Woodpecker was modeled on the Pileated!

My Mom saw one at her bird feeder in South Carolina in the late 1970's. She said it looked just like Woody Woodpecker.

Yes, I think you're right about the trees being damaged already. I had woodpeckers drilling into my siding on my former house, though, and I don't know if there were bugs in there or not.

dondi

Yes, they do massive damage to trees, but it seems those trees are already diseased. As I understand it, they tap the tree and listen for ants. If they hear them, they drill in and clean out the ant colony - that's why the large holes and so many of them, on the several sides of the tree. The holes I've examined (that have been in range to look into) indeed are punky at the center.

Thanks for pointing me to your April photos, Don. They're wonderful!! You certainly exhibited patience in getting those shots.
Yes, they really ARE awesomely big, Smllpkg. :-)

You can really get a feel for the size of these birds from this picture.

I caught some pictures back in April -

They do a lot of damage, though, Laura. I see the effects of their work down at one of our local parks. HUGE holes in the trees!! They ARE spectacular to see, however. Bless you this Christmastime, Laura! Hugs!

Wowowowow! I wish I had them here!

This is the first one I've seen at our feeder, Suzy, so it was a treat to have her (gender according to Don!!). I have a friend that live a couple of miles from here who caught two at once -- on either side of the same tree. It was a spectacular photo!

Thanks, Don!! I appreciate the lesson, too, as I didn't know that about them. I did have a little hairy woodpecker mount a supporting pole for our gazebo and half-heartedly peck at it. I hope it doesn't try that more seriously.

pumpkinhead

Super! Is she a common visitor? We have one that does a fly by once a year-but doesn't venture to our feeders.

dondi

Wow, lucky you - as long as she doesn't decide to drill for the food! Yes, it's a female. On the male, the red crest comes all the way down to the bill, and the mustache stripe is also red.
