This would have been a beaver pond. After the beaver ate the easily available food they moved to a better spot. Now with no beaver dam, the water (pond) is gone. This is what we call a beaver meadow.

Nice glade, I imagine that come sunrise and sunset you'd find some rather larger critters here enjoying the grass.
