Now, when we factor reality into this equation, it becomes much easier! Everytime I buy new socks at Wal-mart, the new socks are a little different and each sock wears out at a differnt rate so now I buy only white socks and am not too worried if they are slightly different, so I go with an answer of 2!

I agree--five is the most reasonable answer. As for the same colors not necessarily being identical, then there are 3 pair of black, 2 of blue, 4 of brown, and 1 of red. If you take out just 10 socks, at the most diverse, you'd have one sock of each colored pair, so you would need the extra, eleventh sock, just as Steve said.
Sorry, PK, can't see that! As worded, the answer is quite definitely 5 (the question does not demand that you are able to pick the pair, simply that you have a pair). Equally, it is assumed that any two of the same colour constitutes a pair (otherwise, surely that would have been stated). Even if you allow that 'same colour' does not constitute a pair, than the answer has to be 11, NOT 10!
Pat the answer is 10. Morris was the only that got it right. How the figured it out I have no idea. I came to the conclusion if you add the sox (20) and divide by 2.
Yes, you could, but the question uses the word "sure", and you couldn't be sure with two, unless, of course, you then turned on the light and found out you'd gotten lucky!
You're no more sure with 20 socks than with 5, actually. With 5 socks, you have at least one pair; with 20, you have all 10 pairs; but in neither case do you know which two socks to select to make a matching pair...

Revised count - 11. I was assuming that all the black ones matched each other etc. If they don't, then you have 10 pairs of socks so number 11 would match one other one. However, if the socks are in the drawer in pairs - as mine are - you need just one choice.
