They are invasive!

The tufted plants, which are along the roadside, are phragmites, and are so invasive that they will take over an area and change the ecosystem. The problem is that the plant can significantly alter marshy areas, filling them in. These areas are needed by waterfowl and waders like herons, and sandhill cranes.

Photo, from southbound I-69, on 3/8/13.

Cutting them will not keep them from spreading, Photogent. They spread by rhizomes once they are established in an area. It is quite a process to try to eradicate them, and burning is one way, but it has to be repeated for several years.

If the highway department kept them cut they would not go to seed and spread as quickly. They had that problem down here with cutzoo (sp) and they got that under control but it took many years.

Thank you, Annjax, Jacque, PLG, Eflie and Gnt.

It is south of Lansing, Gnt.

Yes, Elfie, I read last night it is because it spreads with rizomes.

Yes, PLG, I was introduced to them a couple of years back. The tops, earlier in the fall, are a pretty redish plume. Not pretty what they can do however.

Yes, Annjax. Some invasive species we have even introduced into the US thinking it would solve a problem, only to have more problems with the solution.

I agree with U rose.....Is this I-69 in Michigan south of Grand Rapids????

nice one Rose

There are so many invasive plants in our world. I suppose they had a worthwhile place in ages past, remodeling the landscape for use by other species when one specie became too rampant. But they sure are problematic and expensive to control or get rid of in the world we live in now. Thanks, roseheather............
