Why are you reporting this puzzle?

13. May 1961.
It was on a Saturday and I remember I got school's permisssion to be at the wedding. In those days we had school from Monday to Saturday. from (8:30 to 15:30)
Only on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 12:00.
Here Mum and me are having a chuckle at my auntie's wedding over my uncle (dad's oldest brother) who had forgotten to bring his glasses and had to be pointed out where he had to sign as her witness to this marriage!
Mum had made me a yellow dress. I wasn't a bridesmade but I was asked to sit in the car with the bride and groom when we drove to the city hall. Their driver called me "little canary"☺☺

schutkleur

Hi Brie, thank you. I do remember my mum's gloves we're burgundy coloured and matched her self made outfit (skirt suit?)
In "my time" kids from 4 to 6 went to Kindergarden (Kleuterschool), then from 6 to 12 we went to 'Big' school (Grote school). School years lasted from August till June (from Monday to Saturday), then after 6 weeks 'long'holiday and with a good report you upgraded to the next school year. (Class 1 to class 6) Since 1986 it's no longer called 'class' it's now called 'group'. Class 1 is now group 3, class 2 is group 4...etc.etc. and 'grote school' is now called 'Basis school'!! group 1 and 2 (for 4 to 6 year olds) is what Kindergarden (Kleuterschool) used to be!!! Confusing isn't it?
After this there is secondary school, and after that (not for everyone of coure) University. Since 1968 the compulsory school age is 18.

You are so pretty in this picture -0 and both of you have such lovely gloves.
Saturday school - how awful (for the teachers!). When I started my teacher training we had lectures on a Saturday morning the first year. It was awful; you could never get home and back for the weekend - but we always managed to get to a dance at one of the nearby Colleges in the evening!
Children start here at 4 years old!! Far too young.

Deze was blijkbaar helemaal langs me heen gegaan. Ontdekte 'm nu pas. Hele leuke foto!! Je ziet er schattig uit☺☺

Those were the days, imapuzzle2004, thank you!

Yes Rebecca, I felt really special wearing gloves and a little hadbag.☺ I remember my shoes were cream/yellow!☺
I love your story about the school Rebecca.☺☺☺
School on Saturdays lasted until school year 1964, after that Saturdays weren't a schoolday anymore...Yay....a real weekend!!!
In 1963 a new law (Mammoetwet) was introduced and lounged in 1968..Luckely I had nothing to do with that anymore, I did my exam in 1967 and with the right papers I started to work at the office where I also met my hubby!☺

Thank you patsquire, finding my old photos brought back so many memories! You're welcome, I loved to share them, although they're no longer coming from Little Canary, more like from big grey dove! LOL!

patsquire

☺☺ Many smiles indeed. What a wonderful reminiscence, what a special day! Thank you for telling us about it, Little Canary!

You knew you were dressed up when you got to wear the really impractical white shoes & gloves! I think we were the last generation to wear the gloves.

We never went to school on Saturday, but when we moved to the South (Georgia) we noticed the children already on their way home at 1:15. At first we thought it must be a half day, but later found out their day ended at 1! (Well, actually even before that, since they had lunch before going home!) Later I asked a little girl what grade she was in & was shocked when she responded "Silly! I'm not in school yet, I'm only SEVEN!" I started at 4. I vividly remember watching the clock as it ticked toward 3:05 - then a long bus ride home. Mornings we often stood in the dark, as I recall the bus came about 7:10, and school started about 8.

My parents were both teachers, and my older sister later became one, and "workbooks" were always some of our toys, as well as flash cards. The books had math problems, English questions, tidbits of history, as well as games & coloring. With lots of praise & encouragement, we loved them. At the end of one school year I found out a fellow student would be attending summer school. I hurried home, so excited to ask Mom, "Did you know there's school in the SUMMER??" She chuckled & said yes, then I asked "Can we go??" I was shocked to learn that it was a "punishment", or for kids having trouble. I thought it was a great idea! Mom had a wonderful sense of curiosity and enthusiasm about learning many things, and passed that on to me - one of her greatest gifts.

Oh! sure do miss the 60's
You and your mom are beautiful...

Impie

Thank you missdaisy!

What a wonderful memory! You look so pretty!
