In 1870 the US congress made July 4th a federal holiday and in 1941 granted a paid holiday for all federal employees. The day itself has became a celebration, with the Flag as the symbol of the holiday. Many people celebrate by holding parties, barbecues and firework displays. It is a time when people get together with family and friends to celebrate. On the day it is customary to see people wearing the colours of the flag and decorating their homes with red, white and blue decorations. Stores sell fireworks and sparklers and many communities hold organized firework displays.

There are many patriotic songs associated with July 4th including The Star-Spangled Banner God Bless America, America the Beautiful, My Country Tis of Thee and This Land is My Land.

Thanks to ruthbro.hubpages.com for the information.

That sounds very therapautic Josie - a good thing to do in a power cut too! Enjoy the cookies!

Thanks Pat - you too :~)

Thanks John!

It sure does... I wonder who'll eat it first! Thanks Gail

Nice to meet you Gma, I thought they looked yummy too!

It's the biggest birthday party in the world I think ladywil!

Thanks Ardy, I'm glad you told me that about the flag, I didn't know - I hope you had a good day :~)

Thank you, Mandy. It is a day of celebrating with family and mostly being outdoors. I've reached an age where I willing to stay comfortably inside and leave the more active activities to the young folks.
Something you might find interesting: proper flag etiquette puts nothing on top of the flag. The only exception is the Bible. (The delicious looking pie in the top middle illustration brought that to my mind.)

I did not know that...Thanks for the info.

Wish I thought of some of these yummy things.. For sure next year i will have a pig like this... Thanks

It is almost 1:AM and our power just came on. I have to tell you although it was hot, the quiet was amazing, I prayed and then let my empty head float to almost memories. Things I almost remember from early childhood.

Great puzzle, thank you, love Mandy, some cookies, please. )
