This is only a small portion of dad's collection. He donated the major portion of larger shells you see here to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and they in turn provided this room for the display. Dad is 87 and started collecting when he was 11. When the US decided to build an air force base on Bermuda, dad got friendly with the dredging captains and started finding many more types of shells as they were dug up. The dredgers were brought in to dig sand out of the Castle Harbour to build the runways and facilities. Eventually after coming back to Bermuda from WWII, he started diving and collecting seriously.

Thanks again Dagmar, he did build a special room in the house for the collection, but even that space ran out!.

This collection looks really amazing, when I heard you talking about your father's shell collection I always thought about some showcases in the living-room. LOL I couldn't have been more mistaken. Thanks for showing it to us and even though I got here late as I get anywhere else LOL I want to give a big thank you to you. :)))

Robbiel

Thank you all for your comments, hope you saw my explanation why I disappeared for 2 weeks.
That is a giant clam from the Pacific.
The Institute opened in the 90s and is located on East Broadway going out of Hamilton.

My goodness, Robbie, I'm truly speechless !! This room is beyond awesome, I could spend hours there for certain. You must be SO proud of your Dad. . . what a lot of work he put in, but I know that if you love doing something, it's a joy, not work! Do you have photos of any of the individual shells? Thanks so much for sharing these :)))

Your father made an incredibly big thing, thank you very much Robbie.

WOW! Truly amazing. I love that your Dad got many of his shells from dredging that had another purpose. I had no idea his collection was this extensive. Thank you for posting this overview, notes and also the single picture. I asked my earlier question before I saw this post.

Holy shell shock! Did he do all the identification and labelling as well...that in itself is a full time job.

Love shells...and shell puzzles. Will you do some in 70-80 pieces?

Is that a giant clam shell in the back? Are they or were they in Bermuda? Have only seen them in the South Pacific.
