I like your suggestions, Don. Very practical. I could easily do that, and I believe I will!!! Thanks so much.

I had the problem that the sand was in the garage, and there was often ice between me and it. I found just the thing at Lowes - a "wastebasket" with handles and a pop-open top. It was weatherproof and wouldn't rust on the porch, so I filled it with half a bag of sand and threw in a can. Whenever I saw ice, I sanded it immediately. If it was a lot of ice, I could carry the bucket down and wouldn't have to be coming back all the time. I actually had two - one for ice melt and one for sand - but I put one up at my parents' place so they wouldn't be so reluctant to sand the sloping sidewalk, ice patches in the driveway, and icy path to their garage. I bought the last one at the local Lowe's for my sister, but they have something similar, which would also do, apparently for storing charcoal (labeled "Kingsford"). I highly recommend that approach. One fall on ice is one too many - you're really lucky you didn't get hurt worse.

Thanks, Laura. (You always find such cute avatars.)
I'm a bit sore, but I didn't break anything, Rosie. I'm sure in the light of day I'll see some bruises, though. Thanks for your concern. One of the main problems this year is that my husband couldn't shovel too much at all due to a bout with extreme vertigo that lasted two months. He does have a huge scoop and sometimes used it. Mostly, though, he let the cars trample down the snow (leaving a thick layer on the driveway. Some dear friends of mine were so concerned about my coming home safely from my surgery two months ago that they came over and shoveled to try to make it so I wouldn't fall. My sister visited me a couple weeks ago from Rhode island, and she fell in our driveway. It's been a rough year.

Li, you didn't get hurt falling did you?? I sure hope not---you've had enough to contend with. You're going to have to keep salt or sand on hand and within easy reach for the future winters in Wisc. I'm glad he finally did get a snow blower. How have you been getting your driveway cleared all winter with the huge snow falls you've had? Has he really been doing them by hand? Even my boys wouldn't shovel when they were in their late teens and I had the huge house in St. Paul. I had a large snowblower then in the late 80's and my boys did the whole sidewalk on our block. There were only three houses of younger people and all of the rest of the houses had seniors living in them so my boys became the neighborhood snow clearers. I hope you are okay.

Well done! An investment that is well worth it!

joyfulli

Yes and amen, Patti!

It's worth it!!!

He has already said so, Lyndee. I wish he had, too. I just fell out front coming home tonight. He couldn't get the icy parts up with the machine. It's cold enough tonight that what melted today is pure ice. I fell and couldn't get a purchase to get back up.

lyndee

I bet he sure regrets not having bought it sooner! :)

It is ironic, Don, but I guess he finally got fed up. I got there a long time ago, because our driveway was so difficult to navigate. Be the decision had to come from him. He thinks he got the last one in town!!

I'm a great fan of snowblowers, but it does seem a bit ironic to wait until April to buy one! After this winter, you're lucky they still had some in stock!

joyfulli

That long-in-tooth part was what concerned me about my husband, too. I know snow shoveling can be hard on the heart. It's kinda scary! I vote for a bigger one for you, too!!

roseheather

Funny that he finally got one. ; )

We had a particularly huge snow fall one winter, I think it might have been in the early '80's and my mate bought a snow blower, a small one. The next winter, no snow to speak of. We still have that very same small snow blower. My mate keeps it going, but I really think he needs to consider a bigger one now. This winter tested its limits. It doesn't have the nice blower spout so when the banks were so high beside our driveway, he had to shovel the snow over the banks after blowing what he could to the banks. Sometimes a neighbor, who has an industrial sized blower, came and did our drive. My mate is getting a bit long in the tooth for so much shoveling. ; )

No, Valleystream -- he'd never had a snowblower before. When I met him, he had been paying a young friend to plow out the driveway, but that guy moved away. This year, the driveway never really got cleared out, and it was treacherous underfoot to even get to the cars, and I even got my car stuck in the driveway a few times. It's not been a good situation. I'm thankful he finally broke down and got the snowblower.

This must have been a replacement toy, right? He couldn't have been shoveling snow by hand before this new arrival, could he have? Loved all of today's photos!!
