Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Although this is a beautiful Swan family, my thoughts are on Canada Geese. There are usually two pair that nest on the 8 acre pond in my front yard. They are both there now and both have picked their spots and started roughing out their nests. They don't make much of a nest usually...almost a depression in the taller grass. They usually pick a spot that they can defend more easily. We do have foxes here, we see them pretty regularly passing along the edge of our yard. And lots of raccoons and occasional skunks. And we have a pair of Red-shouldered hawks that nest behind our house(they have their nest built, too). Usually the geese have 4-5 babies each couple and usually they all make it to adults.

Beautiful. Swans are so graceful and majestic. I count eight signets?

warbler

My pleasure Shirley, it really grabbed my attention.

Shian2

So graceful, beautiful picture. Thanks, Dave.

warbler

Thanks Floyd and abel, nice to see you both!

abel

Adorable. :-)

Gladstone

A beautiful part of Nature.

warbler

Thanks Patti and its fun to see all the critters as well.

That's what I see Lyndee, octuplets seven brothers and sisters. Imagine...

Thanks ironroad, it is a beautiful photo.

That's interesting to me Jacki, that they would contain the whole lake for themselves and pull it off, as I've never seen it here. Thanks

jacki2

it is a beautiful image. thank you for sharing it.

our lake is about 25 acres. there is one pair of geese here nesting period. they spend day and night driving all the other bigger birds (other geese, cormorants) off the lake. they don't bother ducks, or the herons, or eagles of course. and we have cayotes, mink, and occasional racoons and otters. i watched a nest of 11 eggs dwindle badly one year but usually most of them make it.

i have never seen a swan on our lake, but would love to. the geese would not find the swans easy to intimidate.

Great find of this swan family.....

lyndee

Wow.....did I count eight babies??? Hope they all make it to adulthood. I know I wouldn't want to mess with a mama swan!

PLG1958

What a beautiful family!!! (And I enjoyed reading about all the critters around your home!)

warbler

Thanks Janet, they sure will fight to protect ther young, just like most humans will.

Thanks Suzy, the Red-shouldered hawks are very active now, so they may have hatched their brood already.

Welcome Nicepeach. Thank you for the comment and I'm glad to hear your enjoying jigidi!

warbler

Thanks Jacki, there were times when I would of loved to borrow that very sheltie!

Excellent Barb, Somehow I missed yours and will come see them.

It is an excellent story for little children, smllpkg. I'm usually surprised they make it so well also, Nancy. There have been tough years but mostly the survival is great. If you've ever been by a protective parent goose, you can see how formidable they can be.

Well said jyl, I've heard of them being "watchdogs" before, too.

Good eye, snooker!

Hi hcamp, We used to have many more geese, sometimes as many as 50-60 on the pond, living. It was horrendous. They ate the grass in the yard to bare ground and kept it that way. You couldn't walk in the yard without cleaning shoes afterwards. There could be up to 25 babies growing up all at once. Sometimes they all honked all night long. But something happened to the population in the last three years or so and its much more balanced. We have a year round stream in my back yard, so raccoons are always a problem with the birdfeeders. I've live trapped and released far away an uncountable amount. But doing that just creates a empty space in the environment and more come in to fill it.

This isn't my photo, Lorna, I missed listing the source of it. Sorry. try to do a photographic essay of the baby geese every year. Thanks.

It looks like good Mama, ladywil, your right!

I like your description, Ellen!!

Thanks Margaret, it is pretty handy and fortunate to see all the wildlife. We had a black bear on our deck last fall which was interesting.

Nicepeach2

How beautiful, both the swans and the photography. I am kinda new to Jigidi, but am really enjoying it. Thanks for the descriptions, I enjoyed it.

pumpkinhead

What a great photo, warbler. I will keep the thought of Canadian Geese with me and hope they too, have a healthy family this year.

jan42ful

Beautiful photo thanks Warbs. It sounds like the Geese have to fight for the survival of their young ones! Hugs.

Looks like 8 little balls of fluff. :)

jyl

Old-time chicken farmers used to use geese instead of dogs for security. They are ferocious in defending whatever they feel is their responsibility! Thanks for sharing this happy family with us, Dave.

smllpkg101

"Flotilla of fluff" - good one, PD. I could never understand the "ugly" part either, but it made a great story. It is amazing that your goslings survive to adulthood with all the other types of wildlife around your pond. BTW, this is a beautiful picture!

SunnyBarb25

Looks like my swans that I posted two days ago hatched their babies on your pond! Wow! A happy occurrence....(-‿•)....Thank you Dave!

bluebird42

Awww! Now I wonder how there could be a book called "The Ugly Duckling" These little guys are SO cute! perfect photo of the graceful swan complete with reflection and excellent lighting! My sheltie did not believe Canada Geese had any rights on the land, and always chased them out of the near by horse pasture and into the harbor! I'm impressed your geese manage to keep their broods alive so well!

madj

Thanks for this beautiful picture of this swan family Dave! And thanks also for the story of all the wildlife you have on your property. I would love that being able to see them all right on my own property all the time! ☺

PutterDutt

A flotilla of fluff! What a lovely place you must have, Warbs!

ladywil2

Proud parent of the little ones.

goingsilver

Lovely photo. Are they on your pond too? And keep us posted on your geese!

hcamp

Warbler- Good luck with your geese. We have been overrun for years by raccoons. Fortunately, we have not experienced any intrusion into our bluebird nest boxes. However, they do climb on our roof and live their droppings. It is a constant cleanup situation.
