This may be a juvenile (young of the year) male. They look much like the females, but have a more prominent crest, and are a little less greenish. Of course, coloration does vary around the country.
Again, a beautiful photo, CM. Our females are not as showy - even less red than this, and without such a big crest - I wonder if it is a different species or just local variation? Anyway, always a joy in the snow. Thanks!
I probably should have realised that the females would not be as vibrantly coloured as the males, but I think this is the first time I have seen a photo of one. She is still a gorgeous looking bird! Shame they are not seen here in the UK!
