Construction began on Boldt Castle in 1900 by millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt. The castle was a tribute to his beloved wife. The castle was to be their summer dream home on the St. Lawrence River, in the heart of the 1000 Islands. However it was not to be, Mrs. Boldt passed away suddenly just months before the completion of the castle. Mr. Boldt was inconsolable and immediately stopped all construction on Heart Island, leaving the property vacant for over seventy years?

Healer and snooker-can you even imagine someone so in love that they would build this? I am sure there would be a full complement of staff, snooker!
Robbie-I agree with you, and PG is again, in his dream world.

Healer

What a statement of love. I love this place, it suits me just fine.

Just another of my summer places in the upstate.

If this was to be her dream home, I hope there was to be a large staff to clean this little cottage.

Anitas-Thank you for the added information. It sounds as if you know the castle fairly well.

warbler

This is a beautiful set, Pumpkin and your words are a treat, too. Thank you

oddio

Sad it would suffer like that for so long, but it's good there are real caretakers now.
Thanks for sharing this great photo and the history.

The castle sat empty and decaying for many years. Vandals did much damage to the interior. In the early 70's, you could visit, but were restricted to one room with everything else roped off. Now after years of repair, renovating ( still ongoing) visitors can tour many of the re-opened rooms. It is truly beautiful.

It is an amazing love story, for sure! The castle is open for tours, and is a big attraction for boats along the St. Lawrence River. I recall going there when I was very young. It is an amazing place to view-if just from the water.
Lyndee, you are so right. If you have dreams, go after them now.

What a sad story. I'll never forget...my parents went to the Thousand Islands and brought me back a little cedar trinket box with Thousand Islands and map on the front. I treasured that little box for a long, long time!

Maryrob

Well that is so sad.Is it sitting there vacant or is it used now?

lyndee

Another reason why we should not delay fulfilling our dreams. Thanks pumpkin.
