I visited the historic section of Waterloo, IL last week. Here is some information you might be interested in:

Waterloo's history dates back to the 18th century, with the French being the first Europeans to settle in the area. They named their settlement Bellefontaine, meaning 'beautiful spring.'

The Capt. James Moore Farmstead in Waterloo, Illinois represents the oldest American settlement in the Northwest Territory. It includes the Bellefontaine House, the kitchen of which is believed to be Moore's original log cabin. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 3, 1982.

Wonder why they changed the name? Bellefontaine is such a pretty name. There's a Bellefonte in Pennsylvania, down in the center of the state, near State College.
